Established in 2026, Hikuai Hilltop Retreat was born from a simple yet vision: to create a space where people can escape to get back to nature. A place that inspires a different way to think about small spaces and materials we build with. Located in the heart of Coromandel, our micro-resort is more than just a place to stay; it is a commitment to conserving the land around us and to delivering an exceptional resort-feel accommodation experience.

We believe that true luxury lies in the simplicity of a well-designed space that puts the priority on working with its surroundings. Our cabins are constructed with low-toxicity materials, ensuring a healthy environment for both guests and the surrounding forest. Every detail, from the expansive mountain views to the natural pool, is crafted to provide an immersive escape that also provides a nod to the natural beauty of the Coromandel.

We aim to have our cabins powered 100% by solar by 2028, ensuring a zero-carbon footprint for every guest stay.

Advanced rainwater harvesting systems provide the vast majority of our water needs, with a backup creek supply.

Minimal Wastage

All waste is fed to a worm-based tank system which composts the waste before re-distributing it to the native forest as clean nutrients.

Our cabins are suspended off the forest floor using steel screws. These screws have a minimal impact on the root networks of the forest surrounds.

Who We Are

We are Brendan and Sumana, the hands and hearts behind Hikuai Hilltop Retreat. Our journey began with a shared love for the Coromandel's raw beauty and a desire to live more simply and sustainably. We value connection—to the land, to each other, and to the community of travelers we host. This retreat is an extension of our belief that there is nothing better for you than time spent in nature. By blending eco-conscious design with warm hospitality, we invite you to experience the same sense of peace that drew us to this hilltop.

During your stay with us, we are available to interact as much, or as little with you as you would like. We offer a handful of local guided experiences and love to offer advice on how to best spend your time in our beautiful corner of the world. We both love to hike in the nearby forest, we are passionate about organic living & enjoy outdoor adventures like skiing, surfing & biking. You will find us to be warm & welcoming but respectful of your private space on the property. Your stay with us is your experience to shape!
